An Introduction to E-Liquids

In previous blog posts, we have talked in detail about the different styles of vaporizers and tanks, today I thought we could delve into what we’re putting into our vaporizers a little bit more. We’re going to look at what makes the best vaporizer e-liquid, and why each ingredient is used.

For the most part, e-liquids consist of five separate ingredients, and each of them plays a crucial role in creating the flavor and vapor production when used.

Vegetable Glycerin:
Also known as VG, vegetable glycerin is commonly used in different types of food and health care products. Because it’s such a common ingredient in other products, most users prefer a high VG mix. A higher VG mix also indicates a thicker oil, as vegetable glycerin is generally thicker than the alternative ingredients included. Its main purpose in e-liquid, is to help create a thick base in which flavoring can be added. If we compared e-liquids to paintings, vegetable glycerin would be the canvas.

Propylene Glycol:
Also known as PG, propylene glycol serves the same purpose as vegetable glycerin. However, PG is a thinner liquid that is capable of producing larger clouds than VG. The downside to high PG mixes, is that it cause dry throat, it’s also capable of causing mild allergic reactions in some people. That being said, propylene glycol is used in just as many products as vegetable glycerin, one of the most notable products it’s utilized in is fog machines!

If you are allergic to Propylene Glycol, fear not, as there are 100% VG mixes available today.

Flavoring:
Now flavoring can range in actually ingredients, but this is kind of a blanket statement. In many cases, flavorings include natural extracts from actual base ingredients. Others simply use a more specific form of vegetable glycerin. There’s a range of different flavorings that can be involved in the creation of e-liquids. Like vegetable glycerin, flavorings are used in a multitude of food products. The majority of e-liquids on the market today use flavorings not-unlike those found in baking products and candy. Flavorings themselves are generally potent as well, because of this, the actual ingredient only makes up about ten to twenty percent of the actual mix, while the VG/PG generally makes up the other eighty to ninety percent.

Nicotine:
Now, nicotine makes up a surprisingly low percentage of your actual e-liquid, but a little bit goes a long way. Generally nicotine ranges from zero to two point four percent. And once you get into premium e-liquids the ceiling gets even lower, usually topping at point six percent. When e-liquid manufacturers use nicotine in their liquid they are almost always using a pharmaceutical grade batch of pure nicotine. Nicotine serves a purely recreational purpose, and most e-liquids can be bought in a form not containing nicotine.

Water:
While rare, water is used to dilute some e-liquid formulas when the VG or flavoring causes them to be too thick or too potent in flavor. Water, when used, makes up an almost negligible percentage of the e-liquid formula.

While there are some other ingredients used in e-liquids at times, these are the major ingredients used in almost all major e-liquid brands. And it’s always important to have a relatively strong understanding of the chemicals we are putting into our bodies.
